The supposed involvement of dogs carrying Brucella suis in the spread of swine brucellosis

Reappearance of brucellosis in a pig production unit restocked with brucellosis-free sows and boars after liquidation of the original infected stock is reported. Epizootiological investigation and laboratory tests revealed that a watchdog, which had been kept in the unit for several years and had had contact with the liquidated herd, was a Brucella carrier and acted as source of the infection. The dog was serologically positive; a B. suis type-2 strain, identical with that isolated from a pig fetus aborted during the outbreak of brucellosis in the sow herd, was isolated from its organ homogenate in guinea pigs.
