Coagglutination test with coloured Staphylococcus aureus for detection of brucella antigens in cattle brucellosis

The coagglutination test, using S. aureus cells stained with Giemsa before coating with antibodies prepared in rabbits against B. abortus S99, detected brucella antigen in the stomach contents of 20 out of 21 fetuses aborted by cows with positive tube agglutination titres. Cultural isolation from the stomach contents by the method of Farrell (1974), using trypticase soy agar plates containing 5% inactivated horse serum, was successful in 16. All 16 isolates were B. abortus biotype 3. All 21 aborted fetuses from serologically negative cows were negative to the coagglutination test. The test, which is described in detail, appears to be a simple, rapid and useful test for field diagnosis.
