Of 10,000 urines submitted to a laboratory for culture and tested for the presence of inhibitory substances, 1651 (16.5%) showed some antibacterial action, and, of negative cultures, 17.0% were attributed to the presence of inhibitory substances in the urine. The significance of these substances and the value of this investigation in routine screening are discussed.
