A study was made of a Friesian herd that had been routinely treated with a cephalonium product (Cepravin dry cow; Glaxo) for dry cow therapy in 1977. Milk samples from 65 treated cows were obtained 48 h post partum and examined by the Intertest method for presence of inhibitory substances [Jacobs et al., DSA 35, 587]. Of these, 54 (83%) passed, 5 were doubtful and 6 failed. 11 samples were examined at or shortly before 96 h post partum. These included 2 previous failures and 2 doubtfuls, all of which passed. Results of this study provide further evidence [see Curtis et al., DSA 40, 2632] that cephalonium is suitable for dry cow therapy from the aspect of the milk seldom containing inhibitory substances on the 4th day post partum.
