Optic nerve and chiasmal lesions due to meningitis

Clinicopathological changes in the optic nerve and chiasm were investigated in 16 cases of meningitis, including 11 cases of purulent meningitis, 3 cases of cryptococcal meningitis and 2 cases of tuberculous meningitis. Pathological changes in the parenchyma of the optic nerve and chiasm were classified into 2 types, i.e., inflammatory and vascular disturbance types. Lesions of the optic nerve and chiasm caused by meningitis were distributed not only in the peripheral portion but also in the central portion. In some cases, transverse lesions were observed.
