Using an in vitro model (the interaction of axenic E. histolytica HM1 and Chinese hamster ovary cells) 3 separate steps were observed in the amoebic killing of target cells: (i) amoebic adherence; (ii) cytolysis of adherent target cells by amoebae: (iii) amoebic phagocytosis of already killed target cells. Studies on the mechanisms behind each of these 3 processes are summarized. Amoebic adherence requires a microfilament function, occurs via a receptor with affinity for GalNAc and is necessary for amoebic lysis of cells. The adherence event and receptor involved in target cell killing can be separated from other adherence event(s) that can lead to phagocytosis.
