Prevalence of Pasteurella haemolytica serotypes isolated from ovine pasteurellosis in Britain

The results of serotyping 1243 strains of Pasteurella haemolytica isolated from cases of ovine pasteurellosis during 1977 to 1981 are tabulated and the distribution of serotypes is compared with a previous report on 406 strains serotyped between 1974 and 1975. Since the first survey, two new A serotypes and a further T serotype have been identified but there was otherwise little difference in the relative frequency of occurrence of each of the serotypes in the two surveys. The proportion of serologically untypable strains increased from six to 11%. Since immunity is serotype-specific the necessity for continuous monitoring of serotype prevalence to ensure incorporation of major serotypes into vaccines is emphasized.
