A study of the mechanical property of aorta in 6 spontaneously hypertensive and 6 normotensive rhesus monkeys was undertaken. The aorta was held at in situ length on a specially fabricated mechanical apparatus. The vessel segment was inflated with Krebs' Ringer-dextrose solution at 37.degree. C while the external radius was measured by a travelling microscope. The circumferential strain and stress were calculated and incremental elastic modulus determined. In normotensive animals this value remained between 5.0 .times. 106 and 5.4 .times. 106 dyn/cm2 at mean blood pressure of the monkey (average mean blood pressure 95.0 .+-. 2.94 mm Hg), while in hypertensive animals, the value varied between 5.1 .times. 106 and 6.4 .times. 106 dyn/cm2 (average mean blood pressure 133.95 .+-. 8.57 mm Hg). Apparently in spontaneously hypertensive monkeys there is a compensatory proliferation of arterial tissue components, which did not allow the mechanical property of the wall to change significantly in 4 out of 6 monkeys.
