Protothecosis in a cat

A soft, pliable mass developed on the hind limb and pad of an 8-yr-old cat which was lame on that leg but was in good condition otherwise. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen revealed yeast like algae. The animal was killed and organisms cultured from the enlarged ipsilateral popliteal lymph were identified as Prototheca wickerhamii.
