The role of olefins and their Cl derivatives in the development of ischemic heart disease (IHD) and other ischemic disease was studied in 1975-1980. Indices of the onset and distribution of IHD, intermittent claudication and cerebral insult were higher in workers engaged in the production of olefins, their Cl derivatives and polyvinyl chloride than in other populations. They were higher in workers exposed to significant and long-term doses of olefins and their Cl derivatives than in those whose exposure was moderate or short-term. They were also higher in workers with occupational intoxication of olefins and Cl derivatives. These agents were an independent risk factor contributing to IHD development.
