A solid-phase radioimmunoassay for the detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin C2 in foods is described. In the assay, antibody-coated plastic tubes are incubated at 4 deg C with known amounts of enterotoxin or with the test sample. Contents are then removed from the tubes and labelled enterotoxin is added, incubation is continued at room temp., and bound and free label are separated by aspiration. Intra-assay precision is approx. 10% and sensitivity is 0.3 ng/ml. Recovery of added enterotoxin from a number of foods with high protein content was satisfactory (83% from cheese).
