Previous experiments on alveolar macrophagic reactions, using the association of an intratracheally injected agent (aluminium silicate) and of promoting factor (heparin and euphyllin), have shown their basic character and stereotyped development. To analyze quantitatively the relations between the 2 cellular compartments of the alveolus as a whole (alveolar walls and air spaces outlined by them), during the development of alveolar macrophagic reactions, the experiments were performed on larger groups of rabbits but using the same challenging and promoting factors. This allowed a daily sacrifice of animals, the doubling of the experiment's duration, and, under these conditions, the obtaining of an adequate number of data (free cells, parieto-alveolar cells) for the statistical analysis, which used the linear regression method and the reckoning of the determination coefficient. The obtained results showed statistically a positive correlation between the cell accumulation inside the endoalveolar and parieto-alveolar compartments of the alveolus, and pointed out the main role of interstitial cells of alveolar walls (local and newly inserted ones) in the development of alveolar macrophagic reactions.
