The effects of oxyfedrine 8 mg i.v. over a period of 2 min, on His bundle electrograms were studied in 16 adults. Thirteen had various conduction defects while 3 were normal controls. Recordings were made at varied heart rates produced by atrial pacing. Oxyfedrine significantly reduced the AH [atrio-His] interval in every patient with intact atrioventricular [Av] conduction. There was no effect on the HV [His-ventricular] interval. Functional and effective refractory periods were measured with the use of atrial extrastimulus technique. The effective refractory period of the atrium and AV node as well as the functional refractory period of the AV node significantly decreased after oxyfedrine administration.
