Patients (134) who had paresis or paralysis of the quadriceps muscle underwent a transfer of the biceps femoris or medial hamstring muscles to the patella. The records of all these patients were evaluated. All received a questionnaire and were requested to make a follow-up visit. Forms (96) were returned and 29 patients presented 32 extremities which were treated with the above procedure. There was an overall improvement measured in decreased extension lag and the initiallly impaired flexion was recovered in nearly all patients. Of the patients who returned their questionnaires, 89% recommended this procedure to someone with a quadriceps paralysis. The purpose of the study was to determine the subjective medium-range follow-up benefits and the objective benefits produced by this procedure, and to see if certain contraindications can be deduced from these clinical data.
