Single silastic implant containing norethindrone acetate was evaluated for interval contraception in 78 women. The menstrual pattern was altered in a significant number of subjects in terms of cycle regularity and amount of blood loss. Cycle irregularity was more evident during the first 3 mo., as compared to the later months. The endometrial morphology varied from atrophic to secretory or just pseudodecidual reaction. This variability probably reflects the sum total of both endogeneous and exogeneous hormonal effects and not necessarily the occurrence of ovulation. Subjective complaints of patients were mostly of a general nature. No significant change was observed in the body weight, blood pressure and pap smears. Twenty women became pregnant during the trial in 610 women months of use. The implant appeared to be effective for only 4 mo., after which the failure rate seemed to increase. The contraceptive efficacy and cycle control of this steroidal implant needs improvement.
