The protective effect of ginsenosides on experimental myocardial infarction in rabbits was previously reported. After i.v. injection of ginsenosides in dogs, vertebral and femoral vascular resistance was lowered, the heart rate was slowed, the atrial pacing threshold for inducing ventricular tachycardia was increased and the utilization of lactic acid in pacing-induced myocardial ischemia was improved. It also prolonged the beating period of guinea pig atria in the infused Kreb's solution deprived of O2 and spared O2 consumption and increased hypoxia-tolerance in mice. These actions may contribute to the protective effect of ginsenosides on myocardial ischemia.
