Malaria in the UK. Some observations on six years' experience in Leeds and Middlesbrough

Details are provided of the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of 164 cases of malaria seen in the UK between 1975 and 1980 at a hospital in Leeds (132 patients) and one in Middlesborough (32). 125 cases were due to Plasmodium vivax and 106 of these infections were acquired in the Indian subcontinent. 32 cases were due to P. falciparum (30 from Africa), 4 to P. falciparum and P. vivax, and 3 to P. malariae. Although half the patients presented with symptoms within a month of leaving the tropics, 10% did so only after more than a year in the UK. Although most of the cases could have been prevented by correct use of prophylactic drugs, 20 patients said they had taken prophylaxis.
