Autoradiographic localisation of 3H-biotin in chick tissues

From 1 day to 4 months old Hubbard chickens were given a diet deficient in biotin. They were then given 100 mu g [3H]biotin by mouth and were killed 48 or 96 h later. Most radioactivity was in differentiated cells, such as hepatocytes, proximal tubular cells of kidney, villous epithelia of small intestine, fat cells, epithelial cells of proventriculus and uropygial gland, and in ependymal cells of the choroid plexus. Undifferentiated and rapidly proliferating tissue compartments showed slight radioactivity. Organs involved in fat synthesis (adipose tissue and the uropygial gland) showed high radioactivity. Results indicate that biotin is essential for other tissues as well as liver and kidney.
