The clinical, karyotypic and pathological features of the male pseudohermaphrodite syndrome in four Miniature Schnauzers are described. The syndrome was characterized by the persistence of Mullerian (paramesonephric) duct structures in dogs with male phenotype. The most common abnormalities were unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism, hair loss from back, peritoneum or abdomen, haematuria and gynaecomastia. Chromosome studies revealed normal male karyotype in three cases and a karyotype of 79,XXY in the fourth. A genetic defect in production of, or response to anti-Mullerian hormone is suggested as the cause of the syndrome.
