Primary carcinomas of esophagus and bronchus with presentation simulating primary carcinoma of thyroid gland

A 58-yr-old man had simultaneous occurrence of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the esophagus, and mucin-producing adenocarcinoma of the bronchus. The thyroid gland contained secondary mucin-producing adenocarcinoma from the bronchus and probable metastatic epidermoid carcinoma from the esophagus. The presentation of the thyroid lesion had concealed the presence of the 2 primary carcinomas which were only discovered at postmortem. The probability of multiple primary neoplasms in a patient and the possibility that the thyroid gland may be a site of metastatic cancer should be kept in mind in order that the appropriate antemortem diagnosis and treatment can be given.
