Pharmacological suppression of the adrenal gland. Considerations on a clinical case

A case of metastatic breast cancer treated with aminoglutethimide is reported. The pathological findings, clinical course and hormone levels throughout the follow-up period and during adrenal inhibition are described, adding some considerations on the efficacy and the correct use of the drug. The most important aspect of aminoglutethimide therapy is undoubtedly the inhibition of the transformation of androstenedione into estrone and estradiol as shown by the hormonal profiles before and during aminoglutethimide therapy.
