Detection of cardiac insufficiency in patients with postinfarction cardiosclerosis and their treatment under ambulatory conditions

To recognize heart insufficiency and evaluate the efficacy of treating with peripheral vasodilators of patients with postinfarction cardiosclerosis seen under outpatient conditions, use was made of special research methods for the assessment of cardiovascular function: bicycle ergometry, tetrapolar thoracic rheography and study of external respiration function. Of 31 patients, 21 received sustac or nitrosorbide for 2-2.5 mo. After the treatment the patients felt better, and angina pectoris attacks seldom occurred and disappeared in some of the cases. The repeated examination of cardiovascular function attests to the increase of the reserve potentialities which manifested by the rise of tolerance to exercise, and by the improvement of body O2 supply. The treatment with peripheral vasodilators resulted in the disappearance of pulmonary hyperventilation seen in some of the cases, and in the improvement of myocardial contractility.
