A computerized interpretation of standard pulmonary function tests

A computer system was designed to process data from measurements of pulmonary function tests suitable for pneumology, occupational medicine and nonthoracic surgery departments. Static and dynamic lung volumes, flow-volume curve, N2 washout curve, airway resistance, diffusing capacity for CO, inhalatory provocation tests and blood gas analysis are considered. A rather complex procedure was designed, trying to cover every possible logical situation. Qualitative rather than quantitative aspects of diagnosis were stressed. Clinical and radiological elements were not examined. The system is structured for screening large patient populations with the basic intent of early discovery and prevention of a further evolution of lung disease. Diagnostic decisions are analyzed. Flow charts of the procedure are presented.
