Animal fluorosis and fluoride content in feed: analytical determination and evaluation of methods employed

Chronic fluoride toxicosis is the type of fluoride [F-] poisoning most often observed in livestock. Animal fluorosis can be the result of excessive F- ingestion; for this reason F- content in several feeds was determined. Using spectrophotometry and potentiometry samples were dry ashed, melted with NaOH and steam distilled at 140.degree. C. Recoveries of F- were determined and computed. Results were compared and all fell within limit values of CEE instructions. Sensitivity and reproducibility were good for both methds but potentiometry was more rapid and simple to carry out and presented a coefficient of variation slightly lower than spectrophotometry.
