Increased hematocrit levels can lead to hyperviscosity in neonates. The incidence of hyperviscosity in the appropriate for gestational age neonate was studied. Neonates [494] were screened at 4 h of age with capillary hematocrit determinations. Two infants had venous hematocrits above 65%, an incidence of 0.45%. Based on this low incidence, routine screening of all neonates for polycythemia is not recommended.
