Hypothalamic afferents to the amygdala of the cat

Horseradish peroxidase (HRP) was injected into various parts of the cat amygdala to determine the origin of the hypothalamo-amygaloid connections. Following injections of HRP into the anterior amygdaloid area labeled cells were found in the lateral division of the hypothalamus, in the dorsal and posterior hypothalamic area, in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus and in the supramammillary nucleus. Injections into the centromedial part of the amygdala resulted in labeling of cells in the lateral hypothalamic area, the dorsal and posterior hypothalamic area, the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis. No labeled cells were observed in the hypothalamus after HRP injections into the basolateral part of the amygdala, with the exception of the basal dorsal nucleus which probably receives afferents from the lateral hypothalamic area.
