Studies reported indicate that the basomedial portion of the amygdala possesses several types of receptors involved in control of prolactin secretion - alpha -adrenergic (stimulatory), dopaminergic (inhibitory) and cholinergic (probably inhibitory). These experiments were performed with adult castrated female rats and will need to be repeated with normal females in order to assess the physiological roles of these receptors. Intra-amygdala mechanisms controlling prolactin output appeared to be distinct from those controlling gonadotrophin output.
