Clinical manifestations and treatment of early cerebral atherosclerosis

The primary examination of 256 50-55 yr-old patients with early manifestation of cerebral atherosclerosis [CAS] (observed for 10-15 yr) revealed transitory disturbances of cerebral circulation in 55.8% of patients and in 61.2 after 5 yr, confirming the stability of their health state during the 5-yr observation. Similar percentages for the first 5 yr were observed in the main symptoms. The exception was pains in the heart region which increased from 66.5% to 91.9%. The rate of development of pathological functional changes differed in men and women. Therapy included stugeron, xavin, halidor and gerotserebrin. Physical therapy was also effective in immediate and long-term results. In most cases, no further progress of disease course was observed during treatment. Improvement in EEG spectrum, rhythm assimilation reaction and lipid metabolism was noted and working ability was retained. The reversibility of clinical manifestations in the early stage of CAS was demonstrated and the importance of early treatment was stressed.
