Data on the developmental milestones of 134 non-institutionalized Indian children with Down's syndrome diagnosed by chromosomal studies were analyzed. The mean period for social smile, holding the head erect, sitting unsupported, standing unsupported, walking alone and speaking at least 3 words to form a meaningful sentence was 6.3, 8.6, 15.7, 25.2, 32.0 and 42.0 mo., respectively. These milestones were reached over a wide range of period. Children with translocation karyotypes had better development potential than the trisomy group.
