Variability of the cell surface in human malignant melanoma

Ten human malignant melanoma cell lines were examined for attachment to experimental substrates. The cell lines varied in their ability to attach to various substrates. Human fibroblast products or collagen-covered substratum enhanced cellular attachment, growth rate as monitored by 3H-thymidine uptake, collagen synthesis as monitored by 14C-proline incorporation, aggregation and development of tissue-like cell masses. EM examination showed that cellular attachment correlates with the amounts of intracellular microfilaments.
