The analgesic effect of intracutaneous papules of sterile water was compared with isotonic saline solution in a clinical study involving 32 patients with acute ureteric colic. The group treated with sterile water had a significantly higher rate of success (89 vs. 36%) and significantly longer duration of pain relief (97 vs. 25 min) than the group treated with saline solution. The possible mechanisms of pain relief were discussed. Intracutaneous sterile water papules resulted in instantaneous pain relief which persisted up to 4 hours. No side effects were observed with the treatment, which is recommended for patients with acute ureteric colic.
