Two cases of bleeding esophageal varices in which the basic hepatic cirrhosis was probably due to prolonged intake of large doses of vitamin A were presented. Development of hepatic cirrhosis probably occurred because of accumulation of vitamin A in the liver, which caused hepatocellular damage. Toxic dosages and extra-hepatic symptoms were briefly mentioned, and it was emphasized that care should be employed in prescribing vitamin A.
