In 1980 there were about 35 500 active veterinarians in the USA compared with 33 000 in 1977. The number in private practice increased from 24 346 in 1977 to 26 665 in 1980 (a 9.5% increase), whereas in the non private practice sector the increase was from 8699 to 8824 (1.4%). The numbers in exclusively large animal practice increased from 1104 to 1294 (17.2%) predominantly large animal practice from 4559 to 4794 (5.2%), mixed animal practice from 2604 to 2768 (6.3%), predominantly small animal practice from 3953 to 4380 (10.8%), exclusively small animal practice from 11 183 to 12 350 (10.4%) and equine practice from 943 to 1079 (14.4%). The number at colleges or universities increased from 2684 to 3035 (13.1%), those in industry from 813 to 931 (14.5%), whereas there were decreases in those in the armed forces from 684 to 608 (-11.1%), federal government from 2440 to 2377 (-2.7%) and state or local government from 1070 to 1043 (-2.5%).
