Hb AI levels were studied in 5 groups of women: normal (N), diabetics (D), normal pregnancies (NP), pregnant diabetics (PD) and gestational diabetics (GD). The NP, PD and GD groups were studied during the last trimester of pregnancy. Hb AI values were high in NP (8.8 .+-. 1.78%) (P < 0.01) and GD (8.44 .+-. 1.69%) (P < 0.05) compared to N (7.6 .+-. 0.5); while values for PD (10.34 .+-. 2.16%) were lower than those for D (14.38 .+-. 4.38%) (P < 0.001), which could be explained by a stricter metabolic control of diabetics during pregnancy. In controls done in pregnant diabetics 2 mo. previously, a positive correlation was found between Hb AI and glucemia (r .+-. 0.57) (P < 0.05). No correlation was found between maternal Hb AI and fetal weight in pregnant diabetics, thus making glycolysed Hb an uncertain factor in predicting whether an infant will be large for gestational age.
