Febrile seizure (FS) is a common medical emergency in the paediatric practice. Majority of febrile convulsions although benign and self limiting but are extremely frightening, emotionally traumatic and cause of apprehension and anxiety for the parents. About 3-4% of all children in developed countries experience FS before the age of 5 years. The incidence of febrile convulsion in developing countries is higher due to poor perinatal care and more prevalent infection and infestations. Frequency of simple FS in India is 10-17%. There have been significant developments in the understanding of pathophysiology, genetic basis and radiological findings in febrile convulsions. The evolution of medial temporal lobe sclerosis following febrile convulsion has been questioned in recent years. In this review the clinical features, pathophysiology, investigation and management of FSs are presented.
