Carcinoma of the large intestine with schistosomiasis--analysis of 279 cases

A comparison of 279 cases of cancer of the large intestine associated with schistosomiasis with 653 non-associated cases treated from 1963-1977 is presented. The average age of the associated group is 5 yr younger than that of the non-associated group. Most of the cancers were located in the ano-rectal region, but the incidence in the non-associated group was higher than that in the associated group (P < 0.005). No difference was observed in the histopathological classification of the 2 groups, but Dukes' classification and the incidence of lymph node metastasis revealed a very significant difference. The prognosis of the associated group was favorable despite a higher operative mortality rate in that group. The comparison of the 5-yr survival rates in the 2 groups showed no significant difference. Schistosomiasis may be involved in the subsequent development of cancer in the large intestine.
