A method of controlling hemorrhage from a disruption of the lower vena cava or iliac vein is described employing the readily available urinary catheter. Introduction via the groin provides a simple and rapid access route. This minimized blood loss, reduced operative time and provided a blood-free field for repair of these venous injuries with minimal jeopardy to the surrounding adjacent structures.
