An aid to clinical diagnosis of tongue worms (Linguatula serrata) in dogs

A total of about 18 500 faecal specimens and 500 nasal swabs from random-source dogs in mid-western USA were examined between 1952 and 1962. Seven cases of infection with Linguatula serrata Froel. were diagnosed by faecal examination for eggs; 2 of these were reconfirmed by positive nasal swabs and recovery of nymphs and adults from the nasal turbinates at necropsy. Gross and histopathological examination of turbinates in the vicinity of the nymphs and adults revealed no evidence of tissue damage that could be directly attributed to the parasite.
