The effect of benzopyrones on pancreatic secretion in anaesthetized dogs with short-term ischaemia

Pancreatic secretion stimulated by continual infusion of secretin and pancreozymin was studied in 14 anesthetized dogs before and after short-term ischemia of the pancreas. Seven dogs were given a combination of coumarin and rutin sulfate (Venalot) before the induction of ischemia and during revascularization. The drug did not affect pancreatic secretion during the pre-ischemic phase. During the post-ischemia phase, the volume of secretion and output of bicarbonate and amylase were significantly higher in the Venalot-treated dogs than in the controls. Both groups showed a marked disturbance of exocrine pancreatic function. This effect of Venalot is attributed to its antiedematous action.
