Effect of insertion of a silk thread suture in early pregnancy in rats

A silk thread suture inserted into 1 horn of the rat uterus on days 1, 2 and 3 of pregnancy inhibited implantation in that horn but did not exert any anti-implantation effect when inserted on day 4 of pregnancy. A silk thread suture inserted into 1 horn of the rat uterus on days 1, 2 and 3 of pregnancy caused a significant increase in the luminal epithelial mitosis count in that horn but did not induce any such rise when inserted on day 4 of pregnancy. It is suggested that the intrauterine device may exert its anti-implantation effect by inducing an increase in the luminal epithelial mitotic cell count.
