Following 19 low anterior anastomoses , performed with the EEA (end-to-end anastomosis) stapler, 11 complications resulted. These included stenosis, anastomotic dehiscence, colocutaneous fistula, anastomotic line hemorrhage, tumor recurrence at the staple line and colonic split. No anal incontinence was encountered. The identification, prevention and correction of these complications are discussed. The relationship between the initial use of the EEA stapler and the number of complications suggests that expertise should be gained with the stapler before it is used clinically.
