Differences in health and constitution between groups of apprentices learning different trades were determined in an epidemiological study of the state of health of apprentices learning typical trades in the field of metalworking, mechanical engineering, railway construction and transport with the aid of a revised method of conducting industrial medical fitness examinations and check-ups. They were primarily related with the selection of apprentices for specific trades based on their state of health and performance capacity. Industrial medical officers played an important role in this process by deciding whether or not individuals applying for certain trades which made high demands on performance capacity were suited for the trade. Social factors were of subordinate significance for classifying the state of health of young people. There was a closer connection between social factors and constitutional development and selected trade.
