Aplastic anaemia in association with oestrus was seen in 6 pet ferrets, examined because of anorexia, depression, and lethargy of 2-5 days' duration. Consistent clinical findings were pale mucous membranes and enlargement of the vulva. Haemorrhages were found in 3 ferrets. Haematological findings included severe anaemia, thrombocytopenia, granulocytopenia, and hypocellularity of the bone marrow. The aplastic anaemia was attributed to prolonged oestrogen exposure in ferrets with protracted oestrus.
