The rate of regeneration of the mucous membrane in the atrophic zone (fundal or antral) was increased in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis, according to 3H-thymidine incorporation into the DNA-synthesizing epithelial cells. In peptic ulcers with localization of the ulcer in the body of the stomach, the rate of regeneration in the area of the ulcer margins was increased during all the stages of exacerbation. If there was no atrophic gastritis in the zone adjacent to the ulcer, the regeneration was delayed in the 1st days of exacerbation; in the subsequent stages, up to the healing of the ulcer, it was considerably accelerated. The similar time course was found in patients with duodenal ulcers in the zone adjacent to the ulcer. Markedly pronounced duodenitis delayed the regeneration of the mucous membrane in patients with exacerbation of duodenal ulcer.
