Interferon in immunosuppressed patients with disseminated herpes

Disseminated herpesvirus infection is a severe complication of the immunosuppressed state characteristic of patients with malignant disorders. Recently 3 patients with severe disseminated herpes infection were treated with parenteral interferon. The interferon was derived from human granulocytes and was administered by i.v. infusion, 1.7-5.1 .times. 105 U twice daily for 6 consecutive days. All 3 patients showed definite clinical improvement within 2-3 days with subsequent complete recovery. There were no significant side effects. These observations are uncontrolled, but are the 1st of their kind in Israel. Our experience is in keeping with previous reports on the therapeutic efficacy of interferon in disseminated herpesvirus infection.
