Electrophysiological effects of ajmaline on normal and pathological sinus function

In a series of 820 tests with ajmaline, junctional bradycardia or sinus pauses were observed 26 times. An indirect study of sinus function was done on all of these patients. With ajmaline, sinoatrial block was noted 25 times in subjects whose corrected sinus recovery time was > 550 ms and observed only once in a patient for whom indirect exploration of sinus function was normal. A systematic study by indirect method of sinus function before and after injection of 1 mg/kg of ajmaline was undertaken to verify if this test constituted a sensitive and specific method for diagnosis of sinus dysfunction.
