In an open 12 wk study in active ankylosing spondylitis, piroxicam was highly effective in improving spinal pain and the duration of morning stiffness. This improvement occurred within 2 wk and was maintained thereafter. Compared to previous therapy the majority of patients showed a preference for piroxicam. One patient was withdrawn due to dyspepsia. A significant increase in blood urea within normal limits was observed and also a slight but significant decrease in ESR.
