Enthusiasm may lead to grand and brilliant results in the fine arts; but, in the sciences, its influence is almost always injurious. Yet some writers censure all the productions of the present period, discerning nothing good or beautiful but in those of former times; others, not less exclusive, consider the present only as an enlightened age, seeing in the past nothing but the shades of ignorance and barbarism. The Wise man will endeavour to avoid equally those rocks, and to find truth between the two extremes.
