The orthograde sectional amalgam root filling technique is suitable in a wide range of teeth including those with curved apices. The apical foramen must not allow a size 30 instrument to pass through it and the canal must be prepared to a size 45 instrument or larger. Teeth with curved apices should be prepared to give a tapered section which must be kept clear of dentine debris. A minimum of 3.5 mm of sectional amalgam should be placed; it is advantageous to use spherical amalgam alloy.
