There has been a marked change in the diagnostic approach to renal mass lesions over the last decade with advances in the fields of ultrasound and computed tomography. The relative frequency of simple benign cysts should influence the selection of the initial modality used. Cost effectiveness and invasiveness should be considered. The I.V.P. [i.v. pyelogram] remains the most useful screening procedure, while renal sonography plays a major role in the subsequent investigation for a mass found on an I.V.P. A standardized approach to the diagnosis of such masses helps in restricting the use of more invasive procedures to those cases where they are necessary.
